The recycled plastic boardwalk at Hermaness NNR is now complete. The team had literaly put in the last screw when it started to snow, not that snow is big news these days! It was great to see the path completed and it fits into the surrounds very well. Although we were glad to get the contract complete we shall all miss travelling to and working on Unst, a very dramatic and challenging place to work.
January update.
Upland Contracts have returned to Shetland to complete the installation of Herma Ness boardwalk after the ‘big freeze’ has thawed ( a little).
This Sunday 29th November, BBC 2 at 7pm – The Adventure Show
item – ‘a look at what it takes to preserve our highest summit’….
Despite the wet and cold start to November the new bridge at Bogingore, Muir of Dinnet is complete. Even after “going over the wellie” in the burn a few times, bridge builders Gordie and Neil remained stoic to the end. The result is a topper of a bridge, already being well recieved by walkers with a penchant for dry feet. The bridge is a 5m span and sports a non-slip deck. The team are now off to Shetland to carry on with the new path at Hermaness, Unst. Here’s hoping for a calm crossing!
The team have now moved onto the installation of a bridge near Burn o Vat, Muir of Dinnet. This is a 5m span timber bridge. So far the concrete abutments are in and the timber structure should (hopefully!) be installed this week. Again this is a cracking spot for a wander about, with lots of paths to explore, from short walks to longer more challenging routes. A good place to tire out the dog on a Sunday.
We have recently completed installing plastic piling dams for SNH at Moidach More near Forres. The moor had been previously exstensively drained and the dams shall help to raise the water table again, encouraging the growth of mosses and other wetland species. The site is adjacent to the Dava Way, and can be easily reached on foot, a grand autumn walk!
We have completed our work for the summer season on Ben Nevis and today (weather permitting) the equipment will be airlifted off the hill until our return next year.
Next stop is Moidach More SSSI near Forres where we are installing plastic piling dams across drainage ditches to restore the natural water-table on the bog.
Upland Contracts installed new waymarking in time for the official opening of the Gynack footbridge on the 20th June. Follow the waymarkers and information boards for a walk around the town and learn about the history of Kingussie.
Work is now well under way on repair to the tourist path up Ben Nevis, follow the link to the Nevis Partnership to learn more about the project.
Stac Pollaidh footpath is ready for summer after our spring maintenance visit. Get directions from the map to take a walk up the Stac!
Pictures of the footbridges recently completed in Kingussie and Abernethy NNR are now up on the portfolio page, have a look!
